Celebrated gospel singer Mercy Chinwo and her husband, Pastor Blessed Uzochikwa, have awarded full scholarships to 100 undergraduates at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) through their MercyIsBlessed Foundation.
The couple announced this generous initiative to an enthusiastic crowd of students during their visit to the university in Calabar, Cross River State, on Friday, July 12, 2024.
The scholarships cover full payment of school fees and additional support to ensure a stable learning environment for indigent but deserving students at the university.
While the scholarships take effect immediately, the criteria for selection and other details for shortlisting eligible candidates will be communicated through appropriate channels.
This philanthropic gesture is not the first from the couple this year. In April, Mercy Chinwo and Blessed Uzochikwa awarded scholarships to 50 undergraduates at the University of Port Harcourt through their ‘MercyBlessed Foundation’ and their son, Charis.
For Mercy Chinwo, the ‘You Do This One’ singer, the scholarships are a way to give back to the community that nurtured her.
“Port Harcourt is home to me. I have fond memories of a city where I dared to dream and hope for a purposeful life. I thank the Lord for His work in me and through me. The scholarship is meant to inspire students to believe in their dreams and ambitions because there is a God who has ‘Excess Love’,” she said.
The singer recently released a 12-track album, ‘Overwhelming Victory,’ which she recorded while pregnant.
Before ‘Overwhelming Victory,’ Chinwo had achieved success with projects like ‘Elevated,’ ‘Wonder,’ and ‘Confidence,’ among others.
