Kano Emirates – Court stops Bayero, four others from parading selves as Emirs

A Kano State High Court, under the leadership of Justice Amina Aliyu, has permanently restrained Aminu Ado-Bayero and four other deposed Emirs of Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye from presenting themselves as Emirs.

In her ruling on Monday, Justice Aliyu specifically prohibited the 15th Emir of Kano, Bayero, and the four other dethroned Emirs, along with their servants, associates, and any appointees, from parading themselves as Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, or Karaye.

The judgment follows a suit filed by the Kano State Government, which sought to prevent the 15th Emir, Bayero, and the other four Emirs from claiming their former titles. The government had also ordered the deposed Emirs to vacate their respective palaces within 48 hours of their deposition.

However, Justice Aliyu clarified that the issue of evicting Bayero from his Nassarawa mini palace falls under the jurisdiction of a rent tribunal and was not part of the current case.

In her judgment, she instructed the deposed Emir and the four other former Emirs to promptly return all Emirate Traditional Royal Artefacts to the government and the current Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Justice Aliyu affirmed that the State Assembly’s Emirate Council Repeal Law 2024 was enacted in accordance with Section 4 of the Constitution. She also confirmed that Governor Abba Yusuf’s assent to the law was constitutionally valid.
