How we killed leader of gang that kidnapped 20 medical students – Police

On Sunday, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun detailed the successful operation that led to the death of the gang leader responsible for the abduction of medical students and the rescue of the victims.

The IGP shared this information during the handover of the 20 rescued students to the Vice Chancellors of the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos.

He stated, “I am pleased to report a successful operation by the Nigeria Police Force, which resulted in the rescue of 27 individuals on August 22, 2024. These individuals had been kidnapped by a dangerous criminal gang in Benue State.

“Among the rescued were 20 medical students from the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, including 16 males and 4 females. They were abducted on August 15, 2024, while en route to a conference in Enugu. Additionally, five other passengers and two other victims were also freed.

“This successful rescue was achieved without paying any ransom. It was made possible through a combination of intelligence gathering, collaboration with other security agencies, community support, and the deployment of our highly skilled officers, whose bravery and precision were exemplary.

“During the operation, our officers executed a coordinated tactical assault against the kidnappers. I am pleased to announce that the leader of this notorious gang was neutralized during a firefight, and his weapon was recovered. Two other gang members were arrested and are currently in our custody, providing crucial information that will help dismantle their criminal network and prevent future abductions.

“It is important to recognize that such rescue operations are complex and demanding, requiring extensive resources and careful planning. I extend my deepest gratitude to the Office of the National Security Adviser for their critical support, as well as to other security agencies and local vigilantes whose contributions were instrumental in this operation. This success highlights the effectiveness of collaborative efforts.

“To all Nigerians, especially those affected by such crimes, we understand the distress and worry you face. We urge you to cooperate with the police and other security agencies in these situations. Cooperation and trust are essential for our success in protecting lives and property.

“We remain committed to eliminating criminal elements that threaten our peace and security. The Nigeria Police Force will continue to use all lawful means to safeguard Nigerians, and we are determined to ensure that criminals are brought to justice.

“As we advance our crime-fighting efforts, we assure you of our vigilance, proactivity, and dedication to achieving a safer Nigeria. We will not rest until every citizen can live without fear and intimidation.

“I commend the bravery and professionalism of our officers and thank all those who contributed to the success of this operation. Together, we will continue working towards a safer and more secure Nigeria.”
