The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) alerted the public on Thursday that 31 inmates who escaped from the Suleja prison are still at large. The NCoS has called on Nigerians to assist in recapturing the fleeing inmates, emphasizing that they pose a threat to public safety and national security.
Assistant Controller of Corrections (ACC) Abubakar Umar, the Service Public Relations Officer, made this appeal in a statement released in Abuja.
This follows the incident on April 24 when a downpour caused significant damage to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, leading to the escape of about 119 inmates.
Umar stated that the NCoS has since employed both overt and covert strategies to recapture all escapees and has strengthened security across custodial facilities nationwide to prevent further breaches.
He added that the service has published information about some of the escapees from the Suleja facility to aid in their recapture.
“This has become essential in our efforts to bring the escapees back to custody,” Umar said. “The details of the fugitives are being shared with sister security agencies and the general public to facilitate their recapture and return to the facility.”
