President Bola Tinubu has officially signed into law the bills establishing development commissions for the South-East and North-West regions.
The South-East Development Commission bill, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu of Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State, was approved by both the Senate and the House of Representatives before being sent to the President for assent in June.
The newly established commission will be responsible for managing funds allocated for addressing environmental issues such as erosion and for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads in Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo, and Anambra states.
In a statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for signing the bill into law. He highlighted that the commission aims to “rehabilitate Igbo land” and promote unity among the region’s people.
President Tinubu also signed the North-West Development Commission bill into law. Jibrin Barau, Deputy Senate President and sponsor of the bill, described the signing as a “testament” to Tinubu’s “commitment to addressing the challenges facing the North-West region and the country as a whole.”
