Nigerian workers, under the banner of the All Workers Convergence (AWC), have declared that anyone opposing the planned protest against hunger in the country is an enemy of the people.
This declaration was made through a statement signed by the AWC’s National Coordinator, Comrade Andrew Emelieze.
A nationwide protest is scheduled to commence on August 1st. Despite some opposition from individuals and groups, the AWC has defended the protest, describing it as a legitimate response to bad governance, hunger, and insecurity.
The workers’ group emphasized that anyone against the planned protest is acting against the people’s interests. According to the AWC, the protest is necessary given the current hardships faced by Nigerians.
The statement reads, “We have consistently called for protest and will continue to do so until the system works for the public good. We fully support the calls by Nigerians for a massive protest to end hunger, hardship, and bad governance in Nigeria.
“In a situation like ours in Nigeria, protesting becomes a collective duty. It is antisocial not to participate in a protest.
“Our people have lost hope in the system. Many able-bodied citizens are either leaving or planning to leave the country. Our people are being strangled daily by bad governance. Our government keeps repeating the same old stories.
“While the vast majority of our people endure hardship, our rulers and a very few others are immersed in unimaginable wealth and wastage of national resources.
“We will not sit idly by as things worsen. Our leaders have made a mockery of governance, and we cannot continue like this.
“Governance under Tinubu has brought untold hardship to our people. Everything is now upside down. It appears governance under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has collapsed.
“We, the Nigerian workers, support the call for a national protest against hunger and bad governance. Protesting is a fundamental human right and is lawful. It is not a crime; it is the duty of all citizens. We shall protest with no intention of backing down. We salute the courage of our people as we continue to mobilize for action towards the day.
“This protest is a revolt against hunger and a rebellion against hardship. Our people are resisting deprivation. This is a revolution aimed at the genuine transformation of Nigeria.
“Our people have suffered enough. They have decided to take action to address the situation. We are going ahead with the planned protest.
“Anyone against this call for protest is an enemy of the people. It is time to emancipate Nigeria from corruption, bad governance, and exploitation. We call for synergy among all organizers of this protest. We shall overcome. No retreat, no surrender.”
