Police ban Shi’ite gathering in Kaduna

The Kaduna State Police Command has issued a ban on all forms of unlawful gatherings by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), including their planned Ashura procession. ASP Mansir Hassan, the command’s spokesperson, made this announcement in a statement released on Sunday in Kaduna.

Hassan emphasized the prohibition, stating, “The command has prohibited any form of illegal protest in the state.” This decision follows intelligence received indicating that the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, also known as Shi’ite, intends to hold a procession to commemorate the 2024 Islamic Ashura day ceremony.

Acknowledging past instances of severe violence, property destruction, injuries, and loss of lives associated with such rituals, Hassan underscored the potential dangers. He warned members of the proscribed sect, reminding them of the legal proscription against their activities, and urged them to abandon any plans for the procession.

Hassan cautioned that the police command would enforce the ban rigorously, applying the full force of the law against any individual or group, particularly outlawed IMN members, who defy the directive.

Furthermore, he conveyed the message of Mr. Ali Dabigi, the Commissioner of Police for Kaduna State, urging law-abiding citizens to proceed with their lawful activities without fear. Hassan stressed that the preservation of the hard-earned peace in the state would not be compromised by the actions of a few “renegades.”
