Nnamdi Kanu – 180 Rep minority caucus members call for release of Nnamdi Kanu

All 180 members of the House of Representatives Minority Caucus have unanimously endorsed a call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu from detention.

The motion, introduced by Rep. Obi Aguocha of Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Federal Constituency, was put forward to the minority caucus of the 10th House of Representatives and was unanimously approved during a meeting in Abuja.

In making the appeal, Aguocha urged his colleagues to take a definitive stance on the ongoing debate surrounding Kanu’s detention and to seek a political resolution for his release.

The caucus comprises members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 115 seats, Labour Party (LP) with 35 seats, New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) with 19 seats, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) with 5 seats, Social Democratic Party (SDP) with 2 seats, Young Progressives Party (YPP) with 2 seats, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with 2 seats.

Aguocha emphasized the need for a unified position within the minority caucus, stating that resolving Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s case is vital for national peace, stability, and unity. He advocated for immediate and strategic engagement with relevant stakeholders to seek a peaceful and political resolution to the issue, which has significant implications for Nigeria’s socio-political landscape.

He highlighted the advantages of addressing the situation through dialogue and reconciliation rather than prolonged legal battles and confrontations. Aguocha believes that a political solution could foster national integration and restore trust among different communities.

Aguocha noted, “Today, opposition parties have taken a decisive stance on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the planned protests, insecurity, dilapidated infrastructure, and the economy. The caucus’s endorsement of the position on Kanu follows my recent meetings with former President Muhammadu Buhari, successful mobilization of 50 colleagues across all parties, and support from the Southeast caucus of the National Assembly. Additionally, the Southeast Governors’ Forum has also called for Kanu’s release.”

He concluded, “This collective action by my colleagues underscores the critical role that legislative bodies play in promoting peace and stability in our nation. I am committed to championing initiatives that advance justice, equity, and harmonious coexistence throughout Nigeria.”
