Lagos will feature future Olympians at youth games – Fatodu

Director General, Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, is confident about the state finishing tops at the 8th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.

While guaranteeing the children’s safety, security, and hospitality for the team during the games running until September 14 at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Fatodu boasted that Lagos will be featuring future Olympians, thanking Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for backing the Lagos State Sports Commission towards a successful outing.

Fatodu noted that the team will get the necessary support to keep athletes motivated and ensure Lagos achieves success at the Games.

He reaffirmed the commitment of Lagos State to further expose the children to the National Youth Games in their formative years and to increase the level of performance among the community of states.

He said, “What Lagos is committed to is to come top and increase the number of medals in the 8th edition of the NYG. We are looking at future Olympians from our athletes, and looking at our future youngsters across many disciplines solidified our role in sports and talent development.

“We are now mapping communities according to their sports peculiarities in the state so that we can identify where to draw the talents from.”

Lagos’ rising stars are in competitive mood, ready to showcase their talent in different sports at the fiesta.

After a successful outing at the zonal elimination ball games in Osogbo, Osun State, Team Lagos is prepared to leave a lasting impression at the games, which began on September 9 in Asaba.

The atmosphere at the closed camp was electrifying while training was intense, with coaches putting the athletes through their paces before the team headed to Asaba on Monday.

Parents lauded Governor Sanwo-Olu for the opportunity given to athletes who are representing the state at the games. They stated that the idea is a lofty one, giving future leaders the opportunity to showcase their sporting prowess at the national level.

One of the parents who spoke to journalists, Mr. Randelph Aworah, gave kudos to the Lagos State Government for the laudable programme allowing young athletes to compete at the national level.

On the eve of the team’s departure, the athletes were treated to a night party at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba Lagos.

The Director General was joined at the sendforth party by the Senior Special Assistants to Governor on Sports and Grassroots Sports, Damilare Orimoloye and Adebanji Atewogboye, Member of the LSCC Governing Board, Professor Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, and the Director, Public Affairs, LSSC, Titilayo.
