Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has urged residents, particularly members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), to refrain from participating in the planned nationwide protests.
During a peace meeting with former chairmen, leaders, and members of NURTW in the state, the governor likened the protest to the EndSARS movement and the ongoing situation in Kenya.
Recently, hashtags like ‘EndBadGovernance,’ ‘TinubuMustGo,’ and ‘Revolution2024’ have been trending on social media, promoting the planned protest.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Union Matters, Bola Taiwo, Aiyedatiwa appealed to NURTW members to avoid the protest for the sake of peace in Ondo State.
“We don’t want any pandemonium in our state; we should not join any protest; we want peace in Ondo State and the South West in general. During the EndSARS protest, a lot of properties were destroyed in this country, and the situation in Kenya is devastating. That is why we are engaging the members of the NURTW; we don’t want that here.
“Mr. Governor has directed that there should not be any protest that will lead to violence in the state. We are appealing to everyone not to join,” he said.
At the meeting, which included three former NURTW chairmen—Solomon Adejayan, Oladutele Obayoriade, and Jacob Adebo—the current union chairman, Ademola Odudu, assured the governor that there would be no protests in the state.
“We have addressed all our members not to join any protest that could lead to a breakdown of law and order because we are not troublemakers or thugs; we are very responsible,” he said.
