Outrage has erupted in Amassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, following the fatal stabbing of Francis Palowei, a final-year student at Niger Delta University, on Monday.
Community sources reported that Palowei was at Sand Dump, a popular relaxation and socializing spot for students when local youths demanded N150 from him. When Palowei refused, they stabbed him to death.
Palowei, originally from the Obrigbene community in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, was set to graduate on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, during the university’s next convocation.
Indoni Engezi, Public Relations Officer of Niger Delta University, confirmed the incident on Wednesday and stated that the university’s academic activities were not affected. Engezi mentioned that the police are actively addressing the situation.
According to Engezi, the Sand Dump’s owner does not charge any fees for using the premises, but some youths have been demanding N150 from anyone wanting to use the area.
Musa Mohammed, Police Public Relations Officer, stated that Commissioner of Police Francis Idu has deployed additional police forces to the community to maintain peace. Mohammed also confirmed that a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the killers.
