UK police have arrested a 34-year-old man in connection with the discovery of two suitcases containing human remains near a famous bridge in western England earlier this week.
The arrest took place in Bristol during the early hours of Saturday as part of a joint operation between London Metropolitan Police and local authorities. The suspect was taken into custody and will be transferred to London for questioning later on Saturday, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police.
Previously, a 36-year-old man was arrested in London on Friday in relation to the gruesome find at the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol. However, he has since been released without charge.
The police have indicated that they are not currently seeking any other suspects in connection with the incident.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Valentine described Saturday’s arrest as a “significant development” in the investigation.
The investigation began after the suitcases with human remains were found on the iconic bridge in Bristol, approximately 100 miles west of London, on Wednesday. Police believe they have identified the two male victims, but formal identification has not yet been completed. Efforts are underway to locate and inform their next of kin.
Additionally, human remains were discovered in a west London apartment, which police believe are linked to the body parts found in Bristol.
Valentine urged members of the public with concerns to speak to officers stationed in the Clifton and Shepherd’s Bush areas in the coming days to provide reassurance following the tragic incident.
