The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has urged the Plateau State government to strengthen town planning laws to prevent a recurrence of incidents like the recent building collapse that resulted in the loss of student lives.
Akpabio made these remarks when the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, along with some traditional rulers, visited him in his office on Tuesday.
“We extend our condolences on the building collapse,” Akpabio told his guests. “Such a tragic event, and the building wasn’t even constructed during your tenure. This highlights the need to reinforce town planning laws and closely monitor the building industry.”
He emphasized the importance of strict adherence to building regulations: “No sentiments should be attached. Regardless of who is involved, if the rules aren’t followed or a building is constructed on a water passage, and the foundation is compromised, that building should be demolished.”
Akpabio also pointed out past leniency towards influential individuals, saying, “Historically, society has hesitated to address issues with buildings constructed by the powerful out of respect. We must change this.”
He concluded with a message of solidarity: “We continue to mourn the loss of those children. The entire country is deeply saddened. On behalf of the 10th Senate, please accept our condolences. We stand with you during this period of mourning.”
Governor Mutfwang explained that his visit to the National Assembly was to participate in the public hearing on the Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2024. This bill aims to upgrade the institute to a full-fledged university, and the governor expressed hope that Plateau State would host the new university.
