On Thursday, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and socio-political organization Afenifere urged Nigerians to exercise caution regarding the planned nationwide protests.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, Afenifere acknowledged that while the right to protest is fundamental, it is essential to consider the broader context of the planned demonstrations.
Ajayi stated, “Afenifere understands that the proposed protest aims to highlight the severe conditions currently faced by many Nigerians. Protests are a legitimate way for citizens to express their dissatisfaction and address grievances.
“However, it is crucial to evaluate whether protests are the most effective method for drawing the government’s attention to these issues. If a protest is pursued, its form and approach must be carefully considered.
“Dialogue remains a powerful tool not only to highlight the current situation but also to determine the best course of action.
“The Federal Government has shown awareness of the nation’s difficulties and has committed to engaging with Nigerians to address the challenges prompting these planned protests.
“The aftermath of the #EndSARS protests in 2020 is still vivid in our memory. The destruction during those protests, such as the modern laboratory in Lagos, has left lasting impacts. The laboratory, which was unrelated to the protest’s grievances, has yet to be replaced, causing significant disruption as tests now have to be sent to the United States.
Afenifere therefore urges government bodies to engage meaningfully with citizens and take immediate, tangible steps to alleviate their suffering.”
