The Edo State government has criticized the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) for allegedly misrepresenting Governor Godwin Obaseki’s comments about the importance of a free and fair election in the state. Governor Obaseki had warned that failing to ensure a transparent election on September 21, 2024, could lead to a significant crisis in Nigeria.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, clarified the governor’s remarks, accusing the APC of attempting to use violence to influence the election’s outcome. Nehikhare stated that during a stakeholders meeting in Benin City on July 21, 2024, the governor emphasized that a fair election is crucial to avoid triggering a major crisis in the country.
Nehikhare pointed out that on July 18, 2024, before the APC’s rally to inaugurate their National Campaign Council, a large group of individuals, believed to be thugs and armed, gathered around Benin airport, causing chaos that resulted in the death of a police officer and numerous injuries. The mob reportedly attacked various institutions, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) secretariat, causing injuries and property damage.
He further alleged that the APC’s actions demonstrate their intent to create disorder and manipulate the upcoming governorship election. Nehikhare urged the APC to consider the nation’s current hardships and avoid irresponsible behavior that could ignite widespread unrest. He also called on Edo residents to conduct their activities lawfully and urged the police to apprehend the identified hoodlums responsible for the violence.
Nehikhare assured that the Edo State government is prepared to assist the police with real-time video evidence from their security surveillance to aid in the investigation.
