Just over a year into his presidency, a campaign billboard promoting President Bola Tinubu’s reelection in 2027 has appeared in Abuja, the nation’s capital. The billboard features an image of Tinubu and his wife, Remi, in an affectionate pose, with the slogan “Grassroots support for Tinubu 2027.” The billboard, located near the Velodrome of the national stadium on Area 1 Road, is sponsored by a group called “Dark matters.”
This early reelection campaign comes shortly after Tinubu marked his first year as president of Nigeria. Concerns are rising about the current administration’s policies, which many believe have exacerbated the country’s economic challenges. Despite having been in office for less than two years, there are fears that the president’s popularity is declining among citizens.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not yet set a timetable for the 2027 elections. In May, Abdullahi Ganduje, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stated that the ruling party is being fortified to ensure Tinubu secures a second term. Ganduje mentioned that the APC national leadership is collaborating with states to ensure that the party has functional offices in wards across the country.
