Women in Edo State, represented by the League of Women Voters in Edo State (LOWVIES), the Edo Women’s Justice Network (EWJN), and the Benin Women’s Forum (BWF), have pledged their support for Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the upcoming September 21 governorship election.
At a joint meeting and media briefing on July 15, the groups criticized the current PDP-led administration under Governor Godwin Obaseki, rating it poorly in sectors such as health, education, agriculture, energy, and electricity. They expressed dissatisfaction with the state of infrastructure and voiced concerns over re-electing the PDP, citing Governor Obaseki’s declining political influence and mismanagement.
The women highlighted Okpebholo’s integrity and capability, asserting that he is poised to win the election decisively. They believe that a new type of leadership is essential for Edo State, and Okpebholo is the right choice to oust the PDP.
Mrs. Doris Idahosa, Chairperson of LOWVIES, praised Okpebholo as a charismatic leader with a strong moral compass and a vision for both rural and urban development. The women emphasized that he is intelligent, accessible, and capable of significantly improving the state’s political landscape and development.
The statement also acknowledged the support from Edo youths and traditional rulers for Okpebholo’s candidacy. The women argued that Okpebholo’s leadership would empower the people, enhance the business environment, and maintain the communal harmony that defines Edo State.
They praised Okpebholo’s philanthropic nature, humanistic values, and deep religious beliefs, asserting that he is well-equipped to unify the state, drive productivity, and raise living standards. His plans include upgrading roads with proper drainage systems, ensuring peace and security, improving education and healthcare, and boosting agriculture and youth employment.
In summary, the women expressed their confidence that Okpebholo’s leadership would lead Edo State to new heights, ensuring transparency, accountability, and rapid economic development.
